Soil Labs: Nigeria Plans a National Network of Soil-Testing Laboratories

Nigerian farmers fertilise by habit, not by data. The same blend goes onto soils that vary field by field, which wastes input, depresses yield and degrades land that is already under pressure. A federal plan to build a national network of soil-testing laboratories is aimed squarely at that blind spot.

Under a memorandum of understanding with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the government intends to establish soil-testing laboratories nationwide, train extension officers and build a soil-health database. The combination matters more than any single element. Laboratories generate readings, extension officers translate readings into advice a farmer can act on, and the database turns scattered samples into a national map of what each region’s soil actually needs.

Soil Data: The Input Before the Input

The practical value is precision. Tailored recommendations mean less fertiliser bought on guesswork and more yield from each ₦ spent — a meaningful gain when input costs sit heavily on margins. A soil-health database, maintained over time, also gives policymakers and agritech firms a shared reference for where to direct investment, seed varieties and credit. You cannot optimise what you have never measured, and Nigerian soil has largely gone unmeasured at scale. The detail in the FG–IITA agreement suggests the intent is systemic rather than symbolic.

Execution will decide the outcome. Laboratories need consistent funding, calibrated equipment and turnaround fast enough to fit a planting calendar; extension networks need enough trained officers to reach smallholders, not only large farms. Built and sustained, this is the quiet infrastructure on which a more productive agriculture rests — the input that makes every other input work harder.
